Eifers Calcined Clay Concrete

The next generation of sustainable concrete mix design is here.

Calcined clay is a high-performance supplementary cementitious material (SCM) that is redefining what sustainable concrete looks like in practice. As the supply of traditional SCMs, fly ash and slag, continues to decline with the closure of coal plants and iron ore mills, the industry needs a smarter alternative. Eifers is already delivering it.

Easy to place, fast to set, and purpose-built for a lower-carbon future, calcined clay concrete is ideal for a diverse range of civil construction applications, from footpaths and concrete casts to major infrastructure works.

At Eifers, we also combine calcined clay with General Purpose Limestone (GL) Cement, producing a blended mix that extends the benefits of this innovative material even further.

What is Calcined Clay Concrete?

Calcined clay is a supplementary cementitious material produced by heating natural clay to high temperatures, a process known as calcination, activating it for use as a partial cement replacement in concrete mix designs. It is sometimes referred to as "calcinated clay", calcination being the heating process by which it is produced.

It belongs to the same SCM family as fly ash and slag, materials long used to improve concrete performance and reduce cement content. But unlike those by-products, which depend on coal plants and blast furnaces that are rapidly shutting down, calcined clay is purpose-produced and available at scale.

The result is a concrete mix that is workable, fast-setting, and genuinely sustainable, without compromising on the quality or performance your project demands.

What can it be used for?

Eifers has successfully used calcined clay concrete across a range of civil construction projects. It is ideal for applications including:

  • Footpaths and shared paths

  • Concrete slabs and casts

  • Civil infrastructure works

  • Government and public realm projects

  • Any project with a sustainability requirement or green design component

What are its benefits?

Sustainability

Calcined clay is a genuine green alternative to traditional SCMs. By reducing reliance on industrial by-products from fossil fuel infrastructure, it supports lower-carbon concrete mix designs and meets the sustainability requirements increasingly mandated on government-funded projects.

Workability

Calcined clay concrete places and finishes well. It is highly workable in practice — suited to a wide range of pour types and site conditions.

Faster Setting

Due to the way calcined clay interacts with available water in the mix, it sets faster than conventional SCM-based concretes. This means quicker finishing times and faster turnaround on site.

Supply Security

As fly ash and slag become increasingly scarce, calcined clay offers a reliable, purpose-produced alternative that isn't dependent on the decline of heavy industry. Eifers has the silo infrastructure and supply chain in place to deliver it at scale, today.

Why Choose Eifers as your Delivery Partner

Eifers is one of Australia's first civil contractors to adopt calcined clay at a production level. While many larger operators remain slow to adapt — constrained by existing plant infrastructure and reluctance to change established processes — Eifers has invested in the dedicated silo capacity, materials supply, and on-site expertise to move beyond trial and into full production.

We're not just using this material. We're helping to set the standard for how it's used in Australian civil construction.

With Eifers, you get a partner who understands the material, has proven it in the field, and has the capability to deliver it on your next project — wherever that project takes us.
