APAM Staff Car Park Extension

Client: Melbourne Airport

Project: APAM Staff Car Park Extension
Main Contractor: Eifers Civil
Timeline: March 2025

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

We were contacted by APAM to discuss the problem of the current staff car park being at maximum capacity and were asked what we could do to provide a solution. APAM needed the finish to be similar to the current asphalt car park and there had to be a minimum 3m clearance to the existing security fencing. We engaged a designer to produce plans which showed the layout of the proposed carpark for the clients consideration which expanded their current staff car park by an additional 83 new car parking bays.

Once the plans and pricing were approved, we organised for PFAS testing to occur and results obtained prior to the Christmas 2024 shutdown period, which would enable construction to commence in January at the conclusion of the APAM embargo period.

Solution

To minimise disruption to existing parking bays, we divided the works into two stages and installed temporary fencing around the work areas to ensure the safety of both our workers and APAM staff, who continued to use the car park throughout the project.

Each stage followed the standard process: soil excavation, sub-grade preparation, construction of crushed rock pavement layers, asphalting, and line-marking. Upon completion of Stage 1, we handed over that section of the site, allowing APAM staff to begin using the additional parking bays immediately.

At the completion of Stage 2 works, all disturbed areas were cleaned and topsoil hydro-seeded before handing the site back to APAM (10 days earlier than programmed).

The feedback from all stakeholders has been positive

  • Feature survey organised by Eifers (subcontractor)

  • The car park extension designed by Eifers using the feature survey (subcontractor)

  • PFAS testing of the materials onsite conducted prior to works commencing by Eifers (subcontractor)

  • Excavation and disposal of spoil at Gate 11 facility

  • Construction of sub-grade and pavement layers.

  • New kerb and channel constructed followed by prime and asphalting

  • Topsoiling of the swale drain and line marking completed in Stage 1 and same process repeated for Stage 2.

We minimised the disruption to the existing car park bays by constructing the extension works in 2 stages, handing over stage 1 for use whilst we constructed stage 2.
